How should decisions be made in the games?`
If your characters do something, look around, open a lock, fight or whatever, usually you use dice to hit a threshold.
e.g. Roll perception (threshold 15). 1D20 + ability modifier or skill (2). Your dice goes 13+2=15. You did it. 13+1, fail.
What do you prefer?
- Players throw dice and post the numbers (sometimes opposing a number I set) for the tests and damage from the weapon stats, in their texts.
You: "I stab the creature with my dagger (melee attack: 17, if hit: 3 damage)"
DM: Armor class 16, so he hit: "Your dagger hit it in an arm and it screams in a high pitch". Reduces the life of the creature by 3
- GM throws dice for everyone and post numbers and outcome. Easier for palyers, more work for DM.
You "I stab it with my dagger"
DM: Rolls, tells you the outcome, change the enemies life points etc.
- Narrative, player describe what they do and DM arbitrariness, I decide if it is working or not. Meh!
I prefer the first one, assuming no one will cheat. Throwing dice would probably work best, because I just do not like to decide if you can do something or not.
if you really had complete characters with skills, although you may have two characters then, one for Noliterre lore, stories and for warlight and one for sole roleplay purpose, this could work fine.
Players would just have to wright down the skills with the ability modifier, like Perception +1 from INT, Sneak +2 from DEX etc.
I want to read your suggestions.
The D&D5 basic rules are available for free, if anyone is interested in them.
There is an online character generator.
