The Emerald Leaf Federation, ELF for short, is a nation of elvish kingdoms in Southern Avaron during the 4th age of Noliterre.
(this is work in progress)
After the apocalyptic events of the third age known as "The Fall" to the elves - some mad leaders united with the Dark Lord, a cult called Shadow Servants took over power, and lead the Freehold to the biggest war in ELF'ish history - everything left of the former nation called Emerald Leaf Freehold, are burning ruins, charred with mundane and arcane fire, filed up with the rotting corpses of elves, humans, dwaves and orcs alike, along with the still red glowing carcasses of the famous war golems, machines powered by arcane magic.
So much knowledge was lost, but there was still hope. There were survivers.
"When there is life, there is hope!" - Old elfish proverb
After the fall the locals gathered around the elders and chose a leader for each town, to control the rebuilding. After a while these cities and towns were rebuild or made new, the fields could be harvest and the people could develop a new civilisation.
Unity and peace where the goals, so trade contracts with neighbouring cities were established and life flourished. The cities vary much in style, because they are inhabited by high elves, forests elves, some dark elves mingles with some foreigners like humans or dwaves.
People started not only searching for old knowledge and artefacts, but also researched new ways of technology. Magic was still there, weaker now, probably due to the heavy use during the war, but the academy of magic is still proud (well the new one, the old one is a giant crater in the ground filled with rubble and corpses). After some time remains of war golems, old tomes of knowledge and crystals aloung other stuff from the old age, were found so the elves quickly adapted it to the newly developed steam engines.
Scientists found out that you can combining the mana crystals growing in the deep caves under the land can store many things. Magic energy called mana, but also the power of steam. If you put such a crystal in the steam streams of the coal powered steam engines in the big factories, the crystals store both and enhance it somehow. Useful for golems and more. Giving the ability and power to move the crystals, embedded in the main body, emitting a warm blue light, they are called power stones, the magic woven in yellow crystals placed in the head called mind stone, gave them enough intelligence to understand the commands given.
These golems were used to work on the fields, sow, tend and reap the rich fruits and flowers growing in the vast fields and thick forests of the lands. But they can be changed, if the need arises, but everyone hopes, there will be no war again. The magnificient machines are controlled by the technomages, masters of the arcane and the technological knowledge.
Golem
There are rumors that these machine are driven by the souls of the dead Elfans burried in the yellow glowing mindstone. This may be possible, since every elfan caries a red gem on his neck called soulstone. Traditional belief is, when you die, it gathers your soul to protect it form falling in the hands of the Dark Lord. The time passed, but still the fear of the Dark Lord is not only a fairy tale to scale children, but something even a grown elve is afraid of.
"May your soul be taken by the Dark Lord!" - Elfish curse
The leaders decided that aiding another would be key for survival, so they founded a federation of elvish kingdoms and for tradition kept the name Emerald Leaf, but not ruled under one king with all the power and dynasties of his family, but a council of elected kings, called Senate, so they called themselves a federation. Although elves like tradition, so the leaders of the different regions still called kings, but are elected every five years.
Unity drove the economy and soon the elves established trade routes and diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries. A new invention was helpful the airship. The elves allready knew how to sail and navigate water, but with the new flying ships trade goods can be moved faster. At the beginning there were some tragic accidents and many people died, but now the technology is safe and widely used.
The powercrystals drive the engines who keep the ship afloat in the air by emiting steam out of vents. Usualy the ships carry more crystals than they need, just in case.
The traders have a lot to offer to other lands. Mostly delicious fruits and nourishing mushrooms, nice-smelling flowers pleasent to the eyes, sweet heavy wine and animals. Cows and pigs are the main things. Also large amounts of the dark and hard wood from the high and strong trees growing here, called Darkwood. Rarely Elfans sell their preferred mount, giant bipedal lizards, called cold ones.
Airship
The Elfans buy fabric for clothes, iron, steel and other metal, which are strangely rare, therefore many things are made of Darkwood or crystals.
Elves should know many things, so it is mandatory for everyone to spent their lives in different aspects of training
0-50 years: Childhood, playing, singing, writing, maths, languages, knowledge of legends, basics of science (physics, chemistry, biology and so on).
50-100 years: early-youthhood, basics of magic and profound knowledge of technology, but also physical training, skills in survival, basic seafare.
100-130 years: youthhood, military training, warfare on land, sea and air, physical training, close combat, ranged combat, magic combat and so on.
130-150 years: Adulthood, training with a master in your prefered profession.
150+ years: Adult, considered fully adult by society. Do what ever the f*** you want, except worshiping the Dark Lord
300 years: retirement, chill and sitting in your rocking chair and shout at the youths ("Back in my days...")
450? probably dead and have your soulstone put in the hall of the ancestors (or a golem muahahaha).
