General description
This is an oligarchy with most of his major cities on the island of Zelder. Most of the cities tend to be concentrated on the coasts, cities tend to be large and sprawling with low populations. These cities are essentially collections of estates that were close somewhat close together and then they wanted to create more convenience for themselves so they paid some of their workers to move into the area and cart in food and other commodities. This caused a need for housing and to feed the workers which created the small middle class that lives on land owned by the upper class and makes wages and also dead.
The inland around the mountain (dormant volcano like most of the island is the archipelago.) has many mines and quarries with shanty villages near them. The shanty villages are in an almost constant state of revolt/pacification.
Military:
Peasants were given small amounts of property in the main cities (like enough to have a small house), they get to live on the property and get free food and are relatively pampered provided that they attend training and fight when and where commanded. They are relatively skilled in their craft considering they have to train 6-9 hours a day to make sure they stay in peak physical condition for the armies. The commanders of the army are rarely not from noble families. The military is mostly loyal to the noble family that pays them.
Social structure:
Nobels: The top of the social structure. They own the land and hire everyone to do their jobs. They are in charge of suppressing revolts on the shanties and selecting new citizens. They rarely marry outside of their class but it happens occasionally it is usually to an especially renowned citizen. They believe that they are inherently better than those under them but they believe that the best of the citizens can compare to the lower nobles. They make most of their money in shipping across the archipelago or mining gems, precious metals, and marble. They usually stick to architecture, art, sculpting, magic, and trade.
Major Noble Houses:
Newharts- This is arguably one of the most powerful noble house in all of Antain but it is one of the biggest too. Because of its size, it tends to have the most diverse range of interests. Thier major interest includes weapon and armor manufacturing (their towns make the best armor and swords), the study of the arcane arts, architecture and public works projects, quarrying marble, and their contracts in the shanties to build schools. The Newharts are the only major noble house that marries to citizens (a few of the Newharts teach in the schools and married part of the "everyone else"). They have 2 major cities Istral, and Inistral they are all relatively small but they have the most condensed population. They achieve this mostly by haveing two story buildings and good sanitation.
Notable members. (since the family is so big they diversify themselves by a middle name)
Reya Pyrix Newhart, Teacher of the magical arts to the Newhartian armies and general of the Newhartian armies. High lady of Istral.
(first name) Hyren Newhart, the great Newhartian architects.
Luna Tetra Newhart, Appointed manager of weapon development and production for the Newharts. High lady of Inistral.
Dartin Pyrix Newhart, Is in charge of providing education to the shanties. Oversees the building of the schools and makes sure people don't cut corners. Married an "everyone else". Part of central government.
The Endines: They own 3 large sprawling towns. They have a relatively low quality of living compared to others but they have the largest populations. Most of their buildings tend to be made of wood. They get most of their money from taxing nobles and citizens. This family owns the capital of the country, Antain. This is the house of most of the central government and by extension, the Endines have a lot of power in the central government. They are also the best administrators in the oligarchy.
The Roes: These people are almost completely in charge of transportation intercontinentally. They transport cargo and get paid large amounts to do so. They have a lot of money and like recruiting citizens who are good at math.
The Chiles: These people own all the mines the shanties are around. They don't really like citizenship.
Citizens: These are the scientists, soldiers, engineers, local merchants, battle mages, inland transporters, bankers, scholars, servants, scribes, bakers, essentially everything that has to do with normal life in the cities. These are the people selected from the shanties to go to the main cities. They are taken away from their families to live in the cities, most don't dare to resist it but there is a quiet resentment among the citizens even though at the minimum their lives are improved greatly with consistent access to food and uncontaminated water from the public works projects in the cities.
Everyone else: These people are used for pretty much nothing but physical labor. They get to improve her skills within the shanties. The only thing they get that the citizens also get is education. The nobles educate them the same as the citizens considering they are both of lesser blood. The education and schools are of decently high quality.
