In the mid Third Age, the Bolkov Empire launched a purge against the Southern Taranta Tribe, because the Empire's leader feared the legends of the recluses, and thought they might be planning revenge on Orctova for their ancestors. The initial assault was extremely successful, with entire villages being slaughtered indiscriminately. The sudden violence caught the Taranta off guard, and they had no choice but to retreat from the Bolkov army and regroup near the southern sea. With diplomacy out of the option, the Taranta named Nas'Gil commander of the Tarantan Warriors.
Out of the lives lost in the initial wave of the purge by Bolkov, Nas'Gil's village suffered the least amount of casualties, and most of the attacking force was killed or wounded. She would have had her village press on the offensive, but knew the other villages were probably targeted, and fled to where everyone knew to meet in such a situation. As commander of the Warriors, Nas'Gil relied on guerrilla tactics to throw off the enemy, like hiding in the snow until the enemy was over them.
Both Bolkov and the Taranta had the home field advantage, so to speak, but the Taranta are the ones who actually live in the harsh conditions. Nas'Gil had few soldiers, but they were all of high quality, and 30% Warrior Elites. Nas'Gil led her people eastward, following the sea line and heading toward the State of the Sanctum border, in a bold and desperate attempt to catch the overconfident enemy in a web. Before retreating from her village, Nas'Gil ordered ten Warrior Elites and their partners to stay behind and out of sight, and to approach the Sanctum border in a steep arch stretching toward the north and reach a certain point on a certain day, mirroring what the rest of the Taranta would be doing. While Nas'Gil and the rest of the Taranta were on the run, around 10 Warriors would separate from the tribe every 20 miles and hide in the snow, trees, or caves, so as not to be seen. When the Bolkov army passed, the Warriors would emerge and chase tail, meeting up with those who had previously been ordered to do the same. Sneaking a few sleeper cells into Bolkov's army was optional, but 45 were willing and able to dispatch some poor fools who strayed too far from their campfires. What resulted in the Winter Warrior's tactical brilliance would be known as the single greatest defeat any nation suffered in the Third Age.
Nas'Gil has been cornered and surrounded by the Bolkov Empire, which picked up on the intended path she was taking and sent another army directly east to the Sanctum border to cut her off. The standoff took place in the Konyuki region, bordering the Holy State of the Sanctum, who, expectedly, did not grant the reclusive tribe sanctuary within their borders. The Winter Warrior engaged in a verbal spat with the Empire's commander, buying as much time as she could for her plan to have a chance at success. Ten minutes passed before Bolokov launched a projectile assault on the Tribe, both with their frontline magicians and magically enhanced siege weapons in the back. The Warriors, regular and Elites, charged in equal parts to the Western army and the Northern army, the Elites reaching first atop their Hunter Spiders and causing discord in the front lines of Bolkov's armies. In this charge alone, over 15% of Nas'Gil's Warrior forces were killed, but the reward was well worth it.
Approximately two minutes after the Tribe made contact with Bolkov, those ordered to trail the Empire's army silently took action, setting the projectile siege weapons of Bolkov's Western Army ablaze. At that point, they, along with the sleeper cells, were able to shout, confuse, and attack Bolkov in the close-quarters combat scenario the Taranta love. In such close quarters, the magician soldiers of Bolkov could not use their skills to their full potential and fell at a rapid pace, panic ensuing. Bolkov's Western army was quickly reaching the point of retreat, but because of the then massive fire from torching their siege weapons, it was unable to retreat. Once the remaining adult members of the tribe saw the fire was big enough for such a scenario, they did their part, as all Taranta are required to learn the basics of hunting and surviving, and charged the Western army, acting as the second wave of Tarantan troops.
Bolkov's Western Army was defeated in 20 minutes, with nearly 70% of its soldiers dead.
Nas'Gil charged with her company to face Bolkov's Northern Army. Like with the situation in the West, they were met with siege weapon fire and magic projectile from the front lines. Because there were no sleeper cells to confuse or set ablaze the siege weapons, her company lost more lives in the charge than the company in the West. The Warrior Elites caused a disruption in the frontlines, and Nas'Gil herself and a select few of her best Elites were able to continue a charge into the Northern Army without halt. By the time she and her guard were surrounded on any side for 50 yards by Bolkov troops, they dismounted from their partners and attacked as a small unit on foot to the left with Nas'Gil's and another Elite's partners, while the other dismounted Hunter Spiders caused havoc in the middle of Bolkov's army, continuing North. 12 minutes after the beginning of the battle, the small troop of 10 Warrior Elites that Nas'Gil ordered to travel independently made contact with the back of Bolkov's Northern Army, starting to cause the discord needed to disorganize such a big army. When Nas'Gil's unit saw the fire set to Bolkov's Western Army in its prime, they got on the backs of the two Spiders that accompanied them and headed back to fight the right half of the Northern Army. An additional 12 minutes after the arrival of the 10 Warrior Elites, the Tarantan troops that fought and defeated the Western Army made their way to the Northern Army, sweeping around Bolkov's West and North flanks, while the Taranta who are not Warriors made a mirroring sweep to enforce the company that originally engaged the Northern Army. With chaos ever present due to Nas'Gil's god-like fighting and the Warrior Elite troops attacking from the back, Bolkov's Northern Army barely had time to see a new wave of enemies hit them from every angle.
Bolkov's Northern Army was defeated in 34 minutes, with over 50% of its troops dead.
Out of two 20,000-man armies, Bolkov was left with a disheartened and forever haunted 15,930 men, not even the size of a standard army.
By the time of this battle, the Southern Taranta Tribe consisted of some 15,000 individuals, Only around 6,000 of that number being Warriors. The Taranta lost 1,231 Warriors, and 1,904 others, a total of 3,105 deaths.
At the sight of such a miraculous turn of events, the Holy State of the Sanctum decided against stepping in and attempting to help Bolkov, and instead spread the word of the slaughter that Bolkov brought on and the short but brutal revenge Bolkov's victims dealt out in the Konyuki region. The publicity brought a sure end to Bolkov's purge of the Taranta, and guaranteed the survival of what was left of the Tribe.
Bolkov attempted to try and purge the Taranta later in time, better prepared, but no matter where its armies looked, the tribe was nowhere to be found.
This legendary battle has a few names. To the undramatic world, it is officially named the Battle of Konyuki. To the Holy State of the Sanctum, it is known as Omega's Judgement at Konyuki.
Though the battle itself looks like a Tarantan victory, in reality the whole attempted purge was devastating to the Taranta. in their history, this battle is known as the Battle of the Cornered Animal, suggesting that they had no choice but to strike in such a way.
To Bolkov and the rest of the world, this battle is seen as an embarrassment and a complete defeat of the Bolkov Empire. It was a battle that forever left its impression on the world. Its name given by those Bolkovs that survived the death trap is the same name that sticks with the world to this day: The Spider's Onslaught at Konyuki.
